Built in Texas

Description
Texas Starting Strength Bar (10kg / 22lbs)
The Best Youth Barbell for Linear Progression
25mm Shaft — "Fine" Knurl — Bare Steel
The Texas Starting Strength Bar (10kg variant) is a purpose-built youth barbell designed specifically for the Starting Strength method of linear progression. This is the official Starting Strength 10KG Bar — trusted by coaches and youth athletes nationwide for safe, effective strength training.
Often considered the best youth barbell for the Novice Linear Progression (NLP), this bar features a 25mm shaft optimized for smaller hands and a 10kg (22lb) weight that allows younger athletes to learn proper mechanics before progressing to heavier loads. With Fine (Type B) knurling and a no center knurl, it provides the same professional feel as the adult bar, scaled down for the next generation of lifters.
Why Youth Coaches Trust This Bar
Standard "junior" bars are often cheap chrome toys. This is a real Texas Power Bar, scaled for youth:
- ✓ 25mm Shaft Diameter: The optimal grip diameter for smaller hands, ensuring a secure hook grip and safe pressing mechanics for children and petite athletes.
- ✓ 22 lbs / 10 kg Weight: Light enough for most children to press overhead, yet heavy enough to provide tactile feedback for the Squat and Deadlift.
- ✓ Fine "Type B" Knurling: Provides secure grip security without being "aggressive." It protects young hands from tears, encouraging them to enjoy training.
- ✓ No Center Knurl: For maximum olympic lift versatility.
Engineered for Progressive Overload
While this bar is lighter, it is built with the same 190,000 PSI tensile strength steel used in our competition bars. This ensures durability and consistency for repeated instructional sessions.
The 5¾" loadable sleeves are shorter to keep the weight centered and manageable, while the 65.5" overall length remains compatible with standard power racks. This allows youth athletes to train safely inside the rack just like the adults.
Who This Bar Is Best For
- Youth Athletes: Kids starting the Novice Linear Progression.
- Starting Strength Gyms: Essential inventory for coaching young clients.
- Rehab Patients: Returning to lifting after injury or surgery.
- Technique Drills: Perfect for practicing the "quick lifts" (Clean/Snatch) with light weight.
- Garage Gym Dads & Moms: Getting their kids involved in the family training routine.
"A dependable tool for building the foundation of strength."
Fits Standard Racks
A common problem with "junior" bars is that they are too short to rack. The Texas Starting Strength 10kg Bar features a shaft length that fits standard 48" power racks, meaning you don't need a special setup to teach your child how to squat safely.
Engineered for Youth Development
- Approachable: 10kg weight removes the intimidation factor of the big "45."
- Authenticity: Bare Steel finish teaches proper bar maintenance habits early.
- Precision: Dual knurl marks help coaches teach consistent hand placement.
Handbuilt in Texas, this bar allows for approachable, controlled training while reinforcing correct lifting form.
Technical Specifications — 10kg Starting Strength Bar
Available Finish — Bare Steel
The Texas Starting Strength Bar is available exclusively in Bare Steel.
- Why Bare Steel? It provides the best tactile feedback for learning the lifts. Using chalk on bare steel creates a secure connection that coated bars cannot match.
- Patina: Over time, bare steel will develop a natural patina. This is expected. Regular brushing and oiling are required to keep it in top condition.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will this fit a standard Power Rack?
Yes. Even though the overall length (65.5") is shorter, the shaft length between the sleeves is designed to fit standard ~48" wide power racks.
What is the difference between this and the 15kg bar?
The 15kg bar is 78.5" long with 11.5" sleeves. This 10kg bar is 65.5" long with 5.75" sleeves. This bar is lighter and shorter, making it better for younger children or absolute beginners with lower strength levels.
Why 25mm diameter?
A standard 29mm bar is too thick for a child's hand to hold securely. The 25mm shaft allows for a safe grip, which is essential when learning to press overhead or pull from the floor.
Does it have a center knurl?
Yes. Just like the adult bars, it has a 4" center knurl. This is critical for teaching the Low Bar Squat, as it provides tactile feedback and helps the bar "stick" to the back.
Can adults use this bar?
It is primarily for youth, but it can be used by adults for technique drills or warmups. However, due to the short sleeves (5.75"), you cannot load heavy weight onto it.

Commonly Asked Questions
Commonly Asked Questions
Do Texas Power Bars come with a warranty?
All Texas Power Bars products manufactured by Capps Welding Inc. have a lifetime warranty on craftsmanship. Our bars have a limited lifetime warranty against bending for the original owner under normal use. We do not warrant any item that has been abused, neglected or dumped on rack pins, safety bars, straps, boxes et al. Bushings and bearings will wear over time. If a bushing or bearing should fail/break under normal use this is covered under our warranty for 5 years.
Any bar shaft that is bent will be handled on a case by case basis and the replacement will be at the sole discretion of Capps Welding Inc.
The original customer may ship a bar back for inspection after written authorization is provided.
Proudly Made in Texas for over 40 years.
How should I maintain my barbell to ensure it lasts a lifetime?
Wipe down the shaft and sleeves with a dry cloth after training to remove chalk and sweat. For deeper cleaning, use a stiff nylon brush on the knurling. Lightly oil the sleeves every few months if needed.
Can I use chalk, straps, or liquid grip with my bar?
Yes. Chalk, straps, and liquid grip are all safe to use and won’t void your warranty. We recommend brushing excess chalk out of the knurling regularly.
What’s the best way to clean the knurling and sleeves?
Use a stiff nylon brush to loosen chalk and dirt. Avoid wire brushes, as they can damage the finish. For sleeves, wipe with a dry or lightly oiled cloth.
Will my barbell ever need oiling or lubrication?
Our bronze bushings are self-lubricating and require very little maintenance. Occasionally wiping the sleeves with a cloth and a few drops of light oil will keep them moving smoothly.
Are Texas Power Bars safe to store in a garage or outdoors?
Yes, but keep in mind that extreme humidity or rain exposure can cause surface rust. If storing in a garage, occasional cleaning and oiling will help prevent rust. We don’t recommend outdoor storage without protection.
How long will the knurling stay sharp?
Texas Power Bars are known for their aggressive, long-lasting knurling. With regular use and proper care, the knurling will maintain its bite for decades.
Can my barbell handle dropping with bumper plates?
Yes. Texas Power Bars are built to withstand heavy drops with bumper plates, but they are not designed for repeated drops on bare steel plates or on hard surfaces without protective flooring.
Do the sleeves spin, and what type of bushing system do you use?
Yes. All Texas Power Bars use self-lubricating bronze bushings for a reliable, smooth sleeve rotation without the maintenance needs of needle bearings.
Are these bars approved for competition use?
Yes. The Original Texas Power Bar and Texas Deadlift Bar are widely approved and trusted in federations including IPF, USAPL, and many others.
